The city of Budapest will “not give up a single square centimetre” of the site of a planned student quarter, Mayor Gergely Karácsony said on Facebook on Wednesday.
Late on Tuesday, the government submitted a bill that would establish a foundation to operate Fudan Hungary University, the local campus of China’s Fudan University, and transfer four state-owned pieces of real estate to the foundation.
“Mark the day: the day when (ruling) Fidesz turns over the site for
affordable housing for 15,000 Hungarian students
to the university of China’s state party,” Karácsony said.
Furthermore, Karacsony protested the government’s “wasting EU funds” and insisted that the government was handling those assets “as their own”. The government is planning to give up on EU assistance worth a total 3,500 billion forints (EUR 9.8bn), Karácsony said, adding that “we will put our foot down and won’t allow that to happen”.
